Woman, 21, dies in Sunshine Coast unit fire; police probe arson
A 21-year-old woman from Kallangur died after being trapped in a Buderim unit fire Sunday night. Police are investigating whether the blaze was deliberately lit.
A 21-year-old woman from Kallangur has died after becoming trapped in a unit fire in Buderim on Sunday night, with police investigating whether the blaze was deliberately set. Emergency services were called to a unit on King Street at 7.30pm, finding it fully engulfed in flames. The woman inside suffered critical burns and was unable to escape before being rescued by neighbours.
She was treated at the scene by a neighbour and rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries at approximately 4.30am on Monday.
Victim identified as 21-year-old from Moreton Bay
The deceased woman was a resident of Kallangur, in the Moreton Bay region. Her identity has not been formally released, but police have confirmed she was the sole fatality. Detective Inspector Robert Lowry of the Sunshine Coast district’s Criminal Investigation Branch described the scene as confronting for all emergency services who attended.
“I feel for the family of the deceased lady,” Lowry said, adding that the family is receiving support from authorities.

Survivor and dog escaped before fire took hold
According to Lowry, a 32-year-old woman and a dog were also inside the unit at the time the fire broke out. The older woman managed to escape before the flames intensified and is reportedly known to the victim. She is now providing support to the victim’s family.
The dog also survived the incident. Residents of neighboring units were evacuated as a precaution but have since been allowed to return to their homes.
Police investigate arson possibility
Lowry said a crime scene has been declared at the unit, and investigators are treating the fire as suspicious. “It’s in the early stages of the investigation,” he noted. “We’re speaking with a number of people who are assisting with our inquiries. We’ll probably know more at the end of the day.”
Police have not ruled out the possibility that the fire was deliberately lit. Forensic examinations are ongoing, and detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and CCTV footage.

Community and emergency response
The Queensland Fire Department extinguished the blaze about an hour after arrival. Emergency services personnel were visibly affected by the severity of the incident, with Lowry highlighting the emotional toll on first responders.
Local residents have expressed shock, describing the normally quiet street as being suddenly filled with sirens and flames. Support services have been offered to those affected by the tragedy.
The investigation remains active. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine the cause of the fire and whether any criminal charges will be laid. The loss of a young life has cast a pall over the Sunshine Coast community as they await answers.
