Woman charged with motorcyclist's shooting murder after bizarre crash scene

A 53-year-old woman has been charged with murder after a motorcyclist's injuries at a crash scene were inconsistent with an accident. Police say she knew the victim.

A 53-year-old Cheltenham woman has been charged with murder following a bizarre incident in Yarram, about 220 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, in which a motorcyclist was found dead at a crash scene with injuries that did not match a road accident. Victoria Police confirmed the charge on Friday, more than a month after the man's death on January 16, 2024.

Injuries inconsistent with crash

Police responded to reports of a motorcycle crash on Yarram-Morwell Road on the afternoon of January 16. At the scene, they found a man dead. However, investigators noted that some of his injuries were inconsistent with those typically sustained in a motorcycle accident. Subsequent forensic analysis revealed that the man had been shot, leading to a homicide investigation.

The victim has not been publicly named, and police have not released details of the relationship between the suspect and the deceased beyond confirming they were known to each other.

Previous arrests and investigation

The investigation spanned several weeks. In the months following the incident, police arrested and interviewed a 39-year-old man and a 28-year-old man, but both were later released without charge. A 50-year-old woman was also arrested and interviewed at the time of the incident but was released without charge pending further inquiries. Police have not disclosed whether any of these individuals are connected to the accused.

Detectives from the Crime Command Homicide Squad continued to gather evidence, leading to the arrest of the 53-year-old woman earlier this week. She was formally charged with murder on Friday.

Court appearance and next steps

The woman was remanded in custody and is scheduled to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon. It is expected that prosecutors will outline the case against her during the hearing. Police have not indicated a motive, and no further details about the alleged circumstances of the shooting have been released.

The charge marks a significant development in a case that initially appeared to be a tragic road accident but quickly took a turn after forensic examinations revealed the truth. Motorcycle crashes are investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Unit, but when foul play is suspected, the homicide squad takes over.

Victoria Police have urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges have not been ruled out. The woman is expected to apply for bail or be remanded further as the case proceeds through the court system.
