Yanbu All Clear After Houthi Missile Threats, Saudi Says
Saudi Civil Defense gave the all-clear in Yanbu after three alerts, as Houthi missile strikes and coalition airstrikes escalate Red Sea tensions.
Saudi Arabia's Directorate of Civil Defense announced on Saturday that the threat in Yanbu Governorate had passed, just minutes after issuing the third alert for the province in recent hours. The all-clear came amid heightened tensions along the Red Sea, following a claimed missile strike by Yemen's Houthi movement on the southern city of Jizan and subsequent retaliatory airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition.
Rapid-Fire Alarms and Final All-Clear
The Civil Defense issued multiple warnings for Yanbu, an industrial hub on the Red Sea coast, urging residents to stay indoors, avoid gatherings, and refrain from filming. In its final update, posted on social media, the agency stated: 'The danger has passed in Yanbu Governorate. For your safety, continue following #CivilDefense instructions and avoid gathering and filming. In case of emergency, call (911).' The rapid sequence of three alarms and the eventual all-clear underscored the volatility of the security situation.

Houthi Strike Claim and Coalition Response
Early Saturday, Yemen's Houthi group claimed via Telegram that a 'Yemeni missile strike' had ignited fires in Jizan, a city further south along the Saudi coastline. This claim followed a statement from the Saudi-led coalition on Friday that it had struck Houthi positions and destroyed targets threatening commercial vessels, in response to ongoing attacks on Red Sea shipping. A Yemeni security source told AFP that the coalition's airstrikes hit a naval base in the port city of Hodeida and a military camp on Kamaran Island, both key Houthi-held locations.
Strategic Significance of Yanbu
Yanbu is a critical energy and industrial center for Saudi Arabia, housing oil refineries and petrochemical plants. The alerts, though brief, highlighted the vulnerability of such infrastructure to long-range missile attacks. The Houthis have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to strike deep into Saudi territory, and the coalition's retaliatory airstrikes aim to degrade their capabilities. The targeting of Hodeida and Kamaran Island also reflects the coalition's strategy to disrupt Houthi supply lines and launch points.

Implications for Red Sea Security
The exchange is the latest in a series of escalations that have drawn international attention. Since late 2023, Houthi forces have intensified attacks on Red Sea shipping, prompting naval operations by the United States and allies. The all-clear in Yanbu may provide temporary relief, but the underlying threats remain. Continued Houthi missile capabilities and coalition airstrikes suggest that further alerts and retaliatory actions are likely, keeping the region on high alert.
