Russia says Ukrainian drone attack kills 7 at Black Sea resort

Moscow accuses Kyiv of deliberately striking civilians at a Gelendzhik beach, killing seven including children, as Ukraine remains silent.

Russian authorities said seven people, including three children, were killed and 40 others injured when a drone struck a beach at the Black Sea resort of Gelendzhik, in what they described as a deliberate Ukrainian attack on civilians. The incident occurred in the village of Arkhipo-Osipovka, part of the wider Gelendzhik resort area in Russia's southern Krasnodar region.

Social media videos verified by Reuters showed what appeared to be a drone slamming into a busy beach area with a loud explosion. A specialist medical disaster team was dispatched to the scene, local authorities said. The regional health ministry said 21 people, including three children, were hospitalized, with nine listed in serious condition.

Russian Officials Condemn Alleged Attack

Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev called the incident a tragedy and said it was a deliberate attack by the Kyiv regime on the civilian population, with no connection to military infrastructure. In a separate earlier statement, he had spoken of falling drone fragments, a phrase that typically indicates Russian air defenses were involved in attempting to bring down or deflect a drone. It remained unclear whether electronic jamming or other countermeasures were used.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of resorting to terrorism, according to the state news agency TASS. The accusations fit a pattern of mutual blame for attacks on civilians in the conflict, which Russia launched in February 2022. Both sides deny deliberately targeting non-combatants.

Escalating Cross-Border Attacks

Ukraine has stepped up long-range attacks deep into Russian territory in recent months, primarily targeting oil refineries and e-commerce warehouses. Kyiv describes these strikes as an effort to make Russians feel the cost of the war, which has already displaced millions and left thousands of civilians dead, most of them Ukrainians killed in Russian assaults on cities such as Kyiv, Mariupol, and Kharkiv.

Last month, Moscow accused Kyiv's forces of killing 11 people, including four children, in an attack on a holiday camp in the Russian-held part of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region. That incident, like the one in Gelendzhik, drew sharp accusations from Russian officials but no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Calls for Restraint and Need for Verification

The latest allegation comes amid an intensifying exchange of long-range strikes. While Russia has frequently bombarded Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, including energy grids and residential areas, Ukraine has increasingly brought the war home to Russians by striking targets far from the front lines. This attack, if confirmed as deliberate, would mark one of the deadliest against civilians inside Russia.

Without an immediate response from Kyiv, independent verification of the circumstances remains elusive. The incident underscores the growing vulnerability of civilians on both sides and raises the stakes for potential escalation. International observers may press for restraint, but with no clear channel for dialogue visible, the cycle of accusation and retaliation appears likely to continue.
