Eight teens charged with murder after Queensland party attack

Eight teenagers have been charged with murder after a 21-year-old man died from head injuries in an alleged planned attack at a Queensland party. Police say more arrests are possible.

Eight teenagers have been charged with murder following the death of a 21-year-old man who was allegedly attacked at a party in Queensland, with police describing the incident as a planned assault carried out by a group armed with weapons.

The man, from Redbank Plains, was found unconscious with severe head injuries after the gathering at a rented Airbnb property in Bahrs Scrub, a suburb of Logan, south of Brisbane, on 26 July. He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and died six days later.

Premeditated Attack Allegations

Detective Inspector Ian Galpin of Queensland Police told reporters on Monday that investigators believe the group came prepared for violence. "The police will allege that this group had a preconceived plan, which included arming themselves with various weapons before attending Bahrs Scrub with the common purpose of inflicting harm on persons at that address," he said.

The alleged assault left a trail of destruction at the scene. Several vehicles were destroyed, the rental home sustained significant damage, and the surrounding street was closed off as emergency services responded.

Major Investigation and Arrests

The fatal incident prompted a major homicide investigation, with more than 80 police officers involved in executing 14 search warrants across three police districts. On 6 August, four teenagers—two 18-year-olds and two 19-year-olds—were initially charged with murder. A further four suspects, comprising a 17-year-old and three 18-year-olds, were located and arrested on Sunday at short-term accommodation in Morayfield, north of Brisbane.

"Our investigations have continued, and [on Sunday] we located an additional four persons at short-term accommodation in Morayfield, and those persons were also arrested and charged with murder," Galpin said.

Community Response and Police Warnings

Police have not ruled out further arrests, stressing that the investigation remains ongoing. "If we identify more persons involved in this offence, then they will be charged," Galpin said.

In the wake of the attack, police liaison officers and community leaders have been working to ease tensions and prevent any retaliatory violence. Galpin expressed confidence that the community would remain peaceful. "Everyone that we have spoken to, they want nothing but peace within their community, and that's why I'm confident there won't be any further retaliation," he said.

The detective also highlighted the crucial role played by local residents in helping police solve the case. "We'll continue to support the community, and we'll also continue to deliver our message that any form of violence will not be tolerated," he added. "If not for this cooperation, I don't think we'd be in the position that we're in today."

Implications and Next Steps

The case has sent shockwaves through the Logan community and raised questions about safety at short-term rental properties used for gatherings. As the teenagers face court proceedings, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities committed to ensuring those responsible for the young man's death are held accountable.

Galpin praised the cooperative spirit of the community, calling it "nothing short of amazing," and emphasized the importance of police and residents working together to solve serious crimes. The coming weeks will see the legal process unfold, and further arrests could be on the horizon as detectives continue their work.
