Rohan Dennis pleads guilty to driving while disqualified after wife's death
Former pro cyclist Rohan Dennis admitted driving while banned, breaching a bond that warned of jail. He faces sentencing in September.
Former professional cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, a charge that puts him at risk of jail after a judge explicitly warned him that any further driving offences would result in imprisonment. The 36-year-old appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday, months after he was handed a suspended jail term and a five-year driving ban for his role in the death of his wife, Olympic track cyclist Melissa Hoskins.
Fatal crash and original sentencing
Hoskins, 32, died on 30 December 2023 after being struck by a vehicle driven by Dennis near their home in Medindie, a suburb of Adelaide. She suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. In May 2025, Dennis pleaded guilty to committing an aggravated act likely to cause harm and was sentenced to 17 months in prison, suspended, on condition that he enter a two-year good behaviour bond. He was also disqualified from driving for five years.
At the sentencing, Judge Ian Press warned Dennis that any breach of the driving suspension would constitute a violation of the bond and would likely lead to immediate incarceration. The court also ordered the forfeiture of his vehicle.

June 2025 driving incident
Just over a month after that sentencing, on 11 June 2025, Dennis was reported for driving while disqualified. Police alleged they observed him driving a car with his two children as passengers. His vehicle was impounded for 28 days. The incident prompted prosecutors to lay a fresh charge of driving while disqualified, to which Dennis pleaded guilty on Friday.
The case will now proceed to the District Court on 1 September 2025, where Dennis will also face proceedings for breaching the good behaviour bond. The judge who originally sentenced him had made clear that any such breach would activate the suspended jail term.
Public reaction and statements
Following the original sentencing, Hoskins’ father, Peter Hoskins, said the family had not yet received an apology from Dennis but expressed that they were not seeking a prison term. “From the outset it wasn’t something we were pursuing,” he said.
In March 2025, Dennis drew criticism after posting a photo of a black Porsche on Instagram with the caption “What an absolute weapon”. South Australia’s Victims Rights Commissioner, Sarah Quick, called the post “deeply offensive” and said it demonstrated “a clear lack of insight into the real and lasting impact of the harm he has caused”. She added that it reflected a profound lack of respect for Melissa and her family.

Background of the couple
Melissa Hoskins competed for Australia in the team pursuit at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, and was part of the squad that won the world title in 2015. Rohan Dennis is a former world champion in the road time trial, winning titles in 2018 and 2019. He also won a silver medal in the team pursuit at the 2012 Olympics and a bronze in the road time trial at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
What comes next
Dennis now faces potential jail time when he appears before the District Court in September. The case has drawn significant attention due to the high-profile nature of both athletes and the tragic circumstances surrounding Hoskins’ death. Legal experts say the breach of the bond, combined with the judge’s explicit warning, leaves Dennis with little room to avoid a custodial sentence. The court will also consider the impact on his two young children, who were present during the June driving incident.
