Alan Jones trial: teen complainant alleges bedroom assault

A court has heard a 17-year-old complainant describe how Alan Jones allegedly entered his bedroom and touched him, in a graphic account.

Warning: This report contains graphic allegations of sexual assault.

The second day of Alan Jones's indecent assault trial in Sydney has featured detailed testimony from a complainant identified as J, who claims the former radio broadcaster sexually assaulted him at a property in Fitzroy Falls in the New South Wales Southern Highlands.

J, who was 17 years old at the time of the alleged incident, has already described a separate assault on the same evening. He is now giving evidence about a second encounter that he says took place moments later, after he had left the living room and gone to his bedroom.

Alleged events in the bedroom

According to J, he and Jones had been watching television and discussing sport when J said he was tired and went to bed. Soon after, he heard a "tap, tap, tap" on his door. Jones entered, asked if he was okay, and then, in J's words, declared "I love you mate" in a "really passionate voice" before pulling him into an embrace.

J told the court that Jones then "groped" him on the buttocks in a manner he described as "aggressive". He said Jones reached around, undid his robe, and pulled his underpants partway down. J alleged that Jones began moving his body so that their genitals touched.

"There was a slight opportunity where the grip ... was released," J said, describing how he managed to step backward and sit on the bed, saying he intended to go to sleep.

'My heart felt like it was going to come out of my chest'

Instead of leaving, J said, Jones walked to the other side of the bed. The complainant told the court that he was terrified. "My heart was racing. I was as scared and nervous as I had been in a long time," he testified.

He compared the feeling to entering a "scary room" he had never been in. J recounted that Jones then placed his hand on his penis and began squeezing it, and that he felt frozen. Jones allegedly said "let's come together", after which the two masturbated together.

J explained that he participated only because he thought it would make the ordeal end sooner. "I thought if I do this, and I just do it myself, it can be over," he said. "I thought it was the quickest way to make it over and done with."

No consent given

J was unequivocal that he did not consent to any of the alleged behavior. He said his only intention was to prevent Jones from continuing to touch him and to bring the encounter to a close.

The allegations are among a number of charges Jones faces relating to historical sexual misconduct. The former broadcaster has pleaded not guilty and his legal team is expected to argue that the encounters were consensual, or that they did not occur as described.

Defense counsel is anticipated to cross-examine J during the trial, testing the consistency and reliability of his recollections, which occurred many years ago.

Trial continues

Court proceedings are ongoing in Sydney, with J expected to face further questioning from both the prosecution and the defense. Strict suppression orders protect his identity, and the court has restricted reporting of certain evidence.

The case has drawn widespread attention because of Jones's prominence in Australian media and the nature of the charges against him. The jury will ultimately decide whether the testimony meets the high standard of proof required for a criminal conviction.

Further evidence is expected to be heard in the coming days, and the trial could take several weeks. As the legal process continues, all parties are reminded that Jones remains presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
